A proportion of the gold is spent on research of new units, which could be allocated at the player's will. The most important is probably the use of Shrines, the FG equivalent of the RPG's "treasure chest," which could heighten morale, give a new item, recruit a new unit, summon enemy units, or even change the game mechanic temporarily (such as allowing passage through woods or lava at minimal cost, or decreasing enemy morale). Also, this fantasy theme lends itself to naturally borrow ideas from the fantasy RPG genre, creating unique hero units and magical items that different units may wield. Mordra, probably the hardest hero to play with, summons two random units for each battle and has access to beast units. Krell, for example, can cast a spell per turn, somewhat like Heroes of Might and Magic and has access to magical units. Unlike PG, FG has four heroes in the long single-player campaign, all of whom must be played differently. Thinking in this direction, it is imperative that the single-player campaign be a strong game, especially given that multiplayer was not as important or convenient then as they are now (also, turn-based games just don't do that well multiplayer). So how is FG different from its predecessors? The key is selling the fantasy motif and maximizing value from it. However, without becoming unnecessarily complex, something which turns away many people from the "deeper" tabletop wargames, PG managed to bridge the link and open up the market for the turn-based wargame into the popular gaming crowd. These are two very different markets: the average PC gamer was younger and more impatient than the tabletop player, a situation which is probably still the case today (I'll probably talk sociology at a later post). This brilliant series managed to port the very niche tabletop wargame genre to the PC. On a higher level, the success of FG is of course an extension of the success of Panzer General (PG). Finishing it tonight, I was not surprised. Some players of SSI's series find this to be the best game in the collection. SSI's Fantasy General (FG) does this perfectly. Game design is no exception - the designer's quest is to add enough detail to creath depth which makes the player enjoy the game, but not so much as to inundate the player with numbers and figures that he would run away.

Scherbius also had difficulty initially gaining a competitive foothold for his technological design, until the German military inquired about his work and its potential application in ensuring the “privacy” and “security” of communications. Though many of these inventors made significant progress with their designs (for example, Hugo Alexander filed for and received a patent for his rotor cipher device in the Netherlands in 1919 ), all of them failed to identify and capitalize on an addressable market for their designs. Trained and educated as an electrical engineer, Scherbius held many patents, one of which was received in 1918 for the device he named Enigma, after the Greek word for “riddle.” Several other electrical engineers and inventors were exploring the principles and concepts of rotor cipher devices at the same time that Scherbius pursued his design. Scherbius was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1878. Developed and crafted by the German engineer Arthur Scherbius near the end of World War I, the machine offered an opportunity to demonstrate the importance of cryptography to both military and civilian intelligence applications. What makes the Enigma machine relevant to this chapter is that it was compromised and subsequently exploited in a manner that was previously considered impossible. The Enigma machine needs little introduction in most information security circles, as its relevance and importance to both information security and world history is well known. Daniel Molina, in Blackhatonomics, 2013 Hacking for the Greater Good The continually changing internal flow of electricity that caused the rotors to change was not random, but it created a polyalphabetic cipher that could be different each time it was used. Likewise, when enciphering, the operator would press the key and the illuminated letter would be the cipher text. The rotors would align and a letter would then illuminate, telling the operator what the letter really was. With a message in hand, the operator would enter each character into the machine by pressing a typewriter-like key. When the Enigma was in use, with each subsequent key press, the rotors would change in alignment from their set positions in such a way that a different letter was produced each time. The original position of the rotors, set with each encryption and based on a prearranged pattern that in turn was based on the calendar, allowed the machine to be used even if it was compromised. It employed a series of rotors that, with some electricity, a light bulb, and a reflector, allowed the operator to either encrypt or decrypt a message. Similar to the Feistel function of the 1970s, the Enigma machine was one of the first mechanized methods of encrypting text using an iterative cipher. The Enigma machine was a field unit used in World War II by German field agents to encrypt and decrypt messages and communications. In the 1940s, Opus Dei found an early critic in the Jesuit Superior General Wlodimir Ledóchowski, who told the Vatican that he considered Opus Dei "very dangerous for the Church in Spain," citing its "secretive character" and calling it "a form of Christian Masonry." In 1939, Escrivá published The Way, a collection of 999 maxims concerning spirituality for people involved in secular affairs. Despite this, Opus Dei flourished during the years of the Franquismo, spreading first throughout Spain, and after 1945, expanding internationally. Escrivá himself recounted that it was in Spain where Opus Dei found "the greatest difficulties" because of "enemies of personal freedom," and traditionalists who he felt misunderstood Opus Dei's ideas. After the civil war was won by General Francisco Franco, Escrivá was able to return to Madrid. In 1936, the organization suffered a temporary setback with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, as many Catholic priests and religious figures, including Escrivá, were forced into hiding. Initially, Opus Dei was open only to men, but in 1930, Escrivá started to admit women, based on what he believed to be a communication from God. And to those who grasp this ideal of holiness, the Work offers the spiritual assistance and training they need to put it into practice." Escrivá summarized Opus Dei's mission as a way of helping ordinary Christians "to understand that their life. Throughout his life, Escrivá held that the founding of Opus Dei had a supernatural character. He gave the organization the name "Opus Dei", which in Latin means "Work of God", in order to underscore the belief that the organization was not his (Escrivá's) work, but was rather God's work. According to Escrivá, on that day he experienced a vision in which he "saw Opus Dei". Opus Dei was founded by a Catholic priest, Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer, on 2 October 1928 in Madrid, Spain.
